to paraphrse www.samknows.com:
  • Whilst there are maybe 15-20 operators who [run their own network and deliver entirely their own broadband services to end users], there are literally hundreds of other ISPs reselling their services.
So my question: If i change my ISP to an operator who simply resells BT services will my traffic still get searched by PHORM?
(according to samknows, BT is the only network available where I am)

Keep it up all you good guys; this is a deadly important issue and determines the whole future of the internet; if it becomes an embedded spy tool in everyone's home as a matter of course.
Britain is ALREADY the most Surveillance Camera heavy area in the world - and plans are afoot to introduce traffic cameras to EVERY major road in the UK. (check the bbc; i will hunt for the link and post it, though its somewhat 'off topic.')

edit:
okay it wasn't the bbc, here it is:

they are using that old and dubious chestnut 'global warming' as their excuse!

I wouldn't trust any BT reseller, just look at the PlusNet debacle where some of their users have been "accidentally" included in the new BT Webwise trials.

Though BT Retail(ISP) and BT Wholesale(the reseller) are seperate, I no longer have any trust in anything that has the BT logo attached to it.

Phorm is being deployed on the BT Retail network.

Most ISPs use BT Wholesale's network to provide the connection from end-users to their ISP. (BT Retail buy BT Wholesale's "Central Plus" product which also provides the last leg of the connection to the internet).

ISPs have a contract with BT Wholesale to provide the connection, I doubt any would take too kindly to BT phorming their customers without their permission, I also doubt ofcomedy would permit it.

It is possible that at some point BT Wholesale will offer phorming as an optional add-on service to ISPs (it may make offering a network level opt-out more practical to BT Retail if implemented by BT wholesale as a "Central plus + phorming" product), but they will not be able to compel any ISPs to use it.

It might be technically practical, but it would remain practically impossible to operate legally... without risking Fraud, Computer Misuse, RIPA, Copyright, and ECHR complaints.

I believe that BT Wholesale have a healthy disdain for Phorm and have watched with horror as BT Retail exhibited a wholesale disregard for their customers, and indeed for any standards of decency.

I'm a nonconPhormist; I won't be conned by Phorm
