See here -: Google answers; adult URLs for denial list (28 Apr 2004)

we have a software application which shows ads when people browse with it. We would like to make sure that it does not show ads on adult sites. We therefore need a reliable list of hard core adult sites which we can load into our software program and are convinced that such a list is available on the web. We already know about DMOZ but are looking for something more consistent and reliable than that.

Hang on a minute.

Phorm is only going to inject its ads into 'partner' sites, right?

So why is he worried about Phorm showing ads in porn sites? Either a site IS a Phorm partner (in which case he will want it to show Phormed ads) or it isn't. Whether or not its a porno site is irrelevant.

Phorm, just say NO!

You are forgetting how ad networks work - they all sell to each other and they all sell to whoever has more visitors than ad suppliers.

If a site partners with an ad network, they could end up showing ads from the majors and some minor ad networks. The more page views they have per visitor the cheaper the ads become as the 'allocation' from the premium networks is used up.

While some advertisers will want to avoid adult sites, for the majority that is where their potential customers will be. It is all down to the brand image and trying to control where ads are shown. Imagine if the marketing manager for one of the brands sees the ad he has paid for showing up on his favourite site alongside images that don't quite meet the brand image. ;)

Hell, Phorm's brand image is so far down in the brown smelly stuff that I would imagine most porno site would be worried about Kent ruining their reputations.

If Phorm are going to syndicate out targeted ads then that means other ad networks will be able to get their hands on phorm cookies, ip addresses, and make the link between the two.

I did wonder if there might be a nasty issue with porn sites and some ambiguous key words... your cunning ad spamming system would look a bit silly if it took toys, babes, girls, inflatables, games in the wrong context.

:)

Try some french and spanish words for everyday items like cones and specialist lenses. No shortage of ads, and few likely to be from the manufacturers of items you expected to see. If Google can't work out what ads to show on innocent searches, what chance a less sophisticated package?

If Phorm is not to track people's surfing on adult sites, then they need to know which these are.

Though ISTR a program a while back that was supposed to detect pr0n sites by the amount of pink on show, so that might be easier :-)

I'm a nonconPhormist; I won't be conned by Phorm
