Question;

Would using freenet and its sibling darknet be a useful way 'round phorm and the isps download police?

Shouldn't that be darknets (with an s). Where lightnet is singular, and darknets is plural :)

I see an explosion of encryption, cryptography ahead. Both because of DPI/Phorm, and attempts to evade regulation.

The risk you take when you participate in a darknet (such as TOR, freenet etc) is control and responsibility. In other words, can you control who is using the service you are responsible for? If you are asked to account for the use of your connection, what will you do?

Incidentally, its a question which pops up on BT's FON network. There, BT absolve you of responsibility for the actions of other people using your connection.

In many ways, regulation is long overdue. People have been able to get away with all manner of overt crime on the internet. Copyright theft (not simply innocent file sharing which is perfectly legal), phishing, fraud, malware (including rootkits and spyware from BT's close friends).

Crime prevention is one thing.

Using DPI for personal profiling/industrial espionage has very nasty implications for personal privacy, free market commerce, and ultimately the right to freedom of speech.

BT/Virgin/TalkTalk customers - you don't need Webwise and Phorm, pure and simple.

How would you pick up/deliver packets without going through the ISP's node?

Would encryption on top help?

Encryption would hide what you were transferring, but not who you were transferring it to.

If you use Freenet (which uses an encrypted cache) beware that under RIPA section 49, the Police (IIRC) are entitled to ask you for the key to decrypt data stored on your computer.

Pleading ignorance is your only hope. And the penalty is 5 years.

So, is that what the BT bods in charge of the original illegal trial are looking at?

I was actually asking about encryption at the transfer level, not once the file had been received.

Ooo, handn't really considered what penalty BT Directors might face. I'll investigate.
