A copy of an email reply from Plus Net

PlusNet PLC has no firm stance on Phorm at this time and we are unable to comment as to whether the company will or will not be using the system in future. Needless to say, if such a system was introduced we would notify those affected by email and updates to the portal.

Plus are now I believe part of BT so I assume that they will follow suit and start using Phorm is so then I am off somewhere else

That's funny, because a couple of months ago, I received an email from Plusnet Customer Support stating that that they 'do not use Phorm and have no intention to do so.' I guess things have changed since then.

Plusnet have stated in a Q&A on the 08/04/09 that they currently have no plans to implement webwise or any similar technology.

I don't think there's really a lot to "Woohoo!" about there.

I note that the statement is simply that "Currently we have no plans to implement Webwise or any similar technology."

Firstly, how long is "currently" in PlusNet Speak?
As I pointed out in another thread, when trying to sort out a list of Phorm-free ISPs...
---------------------------------------------------
"Part of the problem is reading between the lines of cautious statements.

A statement that "we currently have no plans to use Phorm" from an ISP with a history of honesty, keeping its users informed, etc. could mean "Not as long as I'm in charge of this outfit, but I'd better stick the word "currently" in just to cover myself in case we get bought out in six months' time".

The same statement from an ISP with a habit of moving the goalposts could mean "We won't do anything about it until next month".
---------------------------------------------------

As a former PlusNet customer myself, I would certainly put them in the latter category - in fact, it is the very reason I left them, not because of any dissatisfaction with the performance of the service, which was fine, or to get a cheaper deal somewhere else. You may feel differently, but I wouldn't get too elated if I were you.

Secondly, as the man himself points out in that Q&A:
"Plusnet is wholly owned by BT Retail, and I report to senior management in BT Retail. Our strategy needs to be aligned and agreed with BT Retail, and I and the team are working increasingly closely with the BT Consumer and BT Business teams in a number of areas to look for opportunities for growth, to share expertise and so on. Day to day we have a lot of autonomy to run our own affairs, but key decisions are of course agreed with BT (as they have been since the acquisition in 2007 so nothing new here)."

So, how much say will they have in the matter in the long run? Despite leaving PlusNet on a matter of pribnciple, I am not generally "anti-PlusNet" and don't make a habit of knocking them - there were some very good, straightforward people in Sheffield, and probably still are. Form time to time, when PlusNet get a mention here and there, I see a few familiar names still around, and I would be fairly confident that they are not in favour of Phorm - but how much notice of their opinions do you think will be taken at higher level?

Thirdly, and finally, if BT do still decide to go ahead with Phorm but PlusNet remain theoretically Phorm-free, can you trust BT not to cock things up? In the last Phorm trial, PlusNet were supposed to be unaffected - but some PlusNet customers got the Webwise invitation page.

This, of course, was a mistake which BT say will not happen again.

If I had a pound for every time some drone acting as spokesperson for a large company who have ballsed something up has stated that they would like to "reassure" customers that they have "taken steps" to ensure that this "cannot happen in future", but it has happened again, I wouldn't be sitting here typing this, I'd be on the beach in the Bahamas, on the satellite phone (damn the expense) telling my financial lackey that some of my friends don't like this Phorm outfit, so just buy the ruddy company and close it down.

P.S. I've just noticed that this is your first post - welcome to BadPhorm, and my apologies for overlooking that in the first place.
