VirginMedia Cable customers will need a phone line for ADSL (Virgin currently enjoy a monopoly over your cable connection). If you want to avoid BT, a feature called 'Local Loop Unbundling' (LLU) may allow other telecom providers to offer you a phone service. To find out which phone providers are available at your local exchange use the Samknows Broadband Site and check your phone number or post code. You may find that any existing BT phone line can be re-enabled free of charge, making it easy to transfer to a new phone provider (I did). If you have no choice but a brand new phone line, keep in mind you might also be able to use an equivalent line from a 'Wholesale Line Rental' (WLR) provider, such as the Post Office. If you're moving to Sky, you may be able to get your connection fees refunded. Don't accept any offer of broadband from BT. BT have admitted trials of Phorm systems on tens of thousands of customers. Once you've arranged a phone line, contact one of the Phorm free ISPs featured in these threads, or consider members of the Anti Phorm League. I paid a £50 fee to register with an alternative ISP; others may charge more or less. Your new ISP may provide you with an ADSL modem, or you may wish to buy a third party device. If you've got an investment in cable/ethernet routers, a device like the Draytek Vigor 120 might help you get online with minimum disruption. I bought mine from Broadband Buyer (and received it 24hrs later, after 3 months use I'm very pleased with it). Connecting to ADSL simply involved replacing the cable modem with the ADSL modem, and configuring a username and password. If you'd prefer a combined ADSL modem/router I can also recommend Draytek's Vigor 2820 ADSL2+ Security Firewall, which I've been using recently. Good luck. Its not as painful as you think. And chip in that it might not be as expensive as you think either... After Virgin lost the Sky channels, I rang them and negotiated a deal that at the time seemed to be far better than the BT/Sky system. I thought that basic line rental of £45 was good for V+, phone and 4Mb broadband. I'm now paying: £10.50pm to BT for the phone line (which I don't use so no point me worrying about LLU) £15pm to o2 for broadband (soon to reduce to £10pm when my t-mobile contract is up - a move I was planning anyway due to local coverage issues) £17pm for Sky+ (there are usualy deals available on installation costs better than the ones on their website) Grand total £42.50pm - a £2.50 saving soon to be £7.50 - And I was ready to pay more each month to protect my privacy!! I know that o2 haven't made a public statement to say that they won't phorm, but... I did get an assurance by email from them, which I will use to jump ship should they back-track. And finally my message to anyone who's thinking "I'll hold off and see how it pans out" - DO IT NOW!! hitting them in the pocket is the only language that these dim-witted ISP execs will understand - why else would they sell us down the river for a Phorm shilling?? -- <:3_)~ Bye Bye Virgin! Sky+ and o2 broadband is cheaper and better! | ||

All these customers leaving must be worrying someone if they now need to up that to 18 months for all calling plans. Who is tracking your surfing? iCab mobile browser with its privacy controls now available to iPhone and iPod from the App Store - turn images off for faster and beacon free surfing. | ||
