The Global Internet Speedup is about making the web faster. Speed matters on the web and as bandwidth requirements continue to increase, the best way to make sure the web stays fast is to bring the content as close to the users as possible. This decreases latency to high-bandwidth content like video and allows for a more efficient utilization of Internet capacity world-wide.

Hmmm......

Now, I realise that I'm an unreasonably cynical and suspicious old so-and-so with an illogical deep mistrust of any commercial outfit, which increases tenfold if said commercial outfit is across the pond in the Land of the Free-to-make-a-quick-buck-by-any-means-fair-or-foul but...

What are *they* getting out of it?

Why do these apparently benevolent souls want to make the internet faster for *me*, without me having to contribute to the construction costs of their new villa?

Where's the mileage in it for them?

I don't pretend to understand this DNS stuff much - I've occasionally tried OpenDNS when my ISP appeared to be possibly having problems with certain sites, didn't actually find that it made much difference and concluded that the problem was most likely cheap tacky hosting at the other end, and that's about all.

Not being one for the music and video lark, nor a gamer, latency isn't a particular concern here. However, never kick a gift horse in the teeth and all that - if things go faster and my wallet isn't any lighter it *sounds* like a good idea.

What's the catch?

I'm a commercial cynic!
-----------------------

Breaking the WWW up into Commercial regional parcels benefits who?

Similar I think to CD/DVD Region Protections!

This definitely does not benefit the Consumer & aids "Commercial Price Fixing"!
