Our battle to reach a wider audience took one small step closer this sunday with a piece on page 71 of today's Mail on Sunday (16/March).

"BT Spin-off bans spyware"

PLUSNET has broken ranks with its parent BT by banning spyware company Phorm from it's network.

BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media have all signed deals to allow AIM-listed Phorm to install systems that will analyse web browsers' searches and internet viewing patterns to let firms place 'targeted' adverts on screens. Targeted advertising is used by Google on its email service Gmail.

The plan has caused a wave of protest among many internet users who see the system as intrusive.

PlusNet marketing director Neil Armstrong said: 'Phorm is not on our network and we have no plans to allow it on our servers'.

Good news!

Now we just need a true Public Service Data Infrastructure, so that we can hook up with decent ISPs over good cable/wires, without being obliged to have contracts with the crooks :-)

So, sometimes the alarmist articles in the Mail are valid.

I've also got to call the CAA to report a pig flying past my window . :D

There are 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Nildram said something similar about throttling on the Nildram network when they were taken over by Pipex... they were right Pipex simply moved all the Nildram traffic onto the Pipex backbone, closed the Nildram one and tada! throttling - but not on the Nildram network.

Huw, I'm just happy at the tagline "spyware". That should get the Phorm PR team itchy - and they can't post a reply to all the outraged Mail readers. Infact the Mail pretty much broke the original Phorm/121media story back on 24 Oct here

Oobayly - you can say what you want but I like the Mail and Simon Fluendy even more!

however.... as ALL Plusnets' traffic runs through BT's pipes, what's to stop BT simply routing everything via Phorm anyway and telling Plusnet that they have no choice because daddy says so??

What's the law got to do with it? If Phorm's UK activities don't get branded illegal by a judge then surely BT can tell Plusnet to do whatever it wants seeing as it (BT) owns them?
